Maori Phrases Translated Into English

As we all know, maori men and women settled here long ago before the british men and women found this mighty land and tried to claim it. we all know who would win in a fight, *cough* Maori People, just joking... or am i? ;).

Anyway maori and british men and women never got along because of language differences but eventually made a treaty of waitangi to make rights towards maori and british people.
Now the Maori are very outnumbered by different cultures from around the world.
but people are still skeen to learn some maori or a lot of maori now and then.
here the are phrases.

Nau mai ki Aotearoa is a welcoming phrase which means "Welcome to Aotearoa"

____ is my name is an introduction/greeting phrase that includes your name meaning Ko Paris toku ingoa in maori.

What is your name? this phrase is translate to He Aha to ingoa in maori

He pai taku ki te takaro i te whutupaoro, this is translated to I like to play rugby in english.
  1. Where do you come from? is translated to no hea koe? in maori.

I have tried my best to translate them all.

Poi Rakau - Maori Traditional Game

The Maori Game I Chose to talk about is Poi Rakau, This game I have played at school. it was an awesome experience and everyone enjoyed themselves. I recommend everyone trying out this game because of its awesome type of playing style. Here is the link to the game if you want to watch it again. https://www.r2r.org.nz/games-activities-maori-youth/poi-rakau.html

The name of the game is Poi Rakau

The main goal is improving hand eye coordination and also increasing confidence around rākau. Dont forget to have thought ;).

The 2 rules are:

  1. the rākau placed standing up on the ground and wait for Maui/Matou to be called out. The players leave their rākau and move quickly to the left or right trying to catch the rākau before it touches the ground.
  2. A player can be out if they don't catch the next rākau or make a bad pass (where the other player has NO chance of getting to the rākau before it hits the ground or is poorly stood up).

The Waiata - A Song in Your Heart - Tutira Mai Nga Iwi

Tutira Mai Nga Iwi is a coming together & supporting waiata for everyone to join and sing along in.
This waiata is the most used around the country, since it is a waiata of being people together and is a showing of love and dedication.

At my old school: Tamaki Primary, This waiata was an amazing and special song that everyone loved to sing, even when going to trips. Since our school is all about Originality and Culture. Maori,Samoan,Tongan,Fijian and Cook Island songs/waiatas are sung at special occasions but the most sung is Tutira Mai Nga Iwi.

I Love this song because it warms my heart to see everyone singing to it, and because i love laughing deep inside my heart about how the boys sing real loud and go off key.

if you want to hear and listen to this inspiring song here is the link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxorRtINRTc :D Merry Christmas and Happy New year :)

Fun,Weird and Amazing Facts about my Family.

Hmmm facts about my family, to be honest I'm supposed to know this but I don't.

Just Kidding!, The 3 people I interviewed was My mum, My dad & My older sister

My Sister:
She is a Bartender at NZMA Eden Park and loves to go out with friends.
He favourite foods are made by my mum :D.

Wider Family - Family with 9 children

For me Being the middle child of 6 children in my family its normal for me to  lead my 2 younger siblings to do good things and not to do bad things.  My thought of having 8 other siblings would be difficult but also a big help.

I Would love 8 other siblings because it would be easier to do things and help clean and wash things.
but the worst thing about having 8 other siblings are bills and costing for a lot of things. plus the overwhelmed announce of arguing and fighting. guys don't tell me you haven't experienced a headache because of your siblings fighting of toys or seat *cough* Kira,Teresa and others from school. but most of all is what you get out of it that makes you learn and helps you not make more mistakes.

Having a bigger family is hard but for me it would be a good experience of how other people felt about having a big family with a lot of kids they have to deal with. :D Have a good day guys!

My Pepeha - Origination through a Lifetime of Obstacles

This is my Pepeha I will present to all the views on looking through my blog throughout the summer learning journey activity. I am happy and overwhelmed with all your comments. Thank you all.

This Pepeha was also helped by my mum (Thanks Mum) because I found some hard for example marae. but that rest I found easy because I learnt them a lot at my Old School Tamaki Primary Thank you teachers for teaching us maori mostly you Miss Kyla!.
And for a student like me I am from 5 tribes from 4 other maraes and on top of that with over 10 people that are either a Chief of a tribe like Terau Paraha,A Tohunga - healer like my great great grandfather Rua Kenana and from my dad side The Maori King - Tūheitia Paki

I am very interested into my own family and my origination throughout the many years of existence.
For everyone that's doing the summer learning journey GoodLuck and hope to see some of you next year!

Special Meals - Meals that Make your mouth water.

Special meals are meals that you have tried and you love. a meal that you seem is special not because its junk food or anything but it is made with love and is a traditional dish.
Today I will share with you my Favourite Dish.

HomeMade Macaroni & Cheese.

This dish was made by my mum and as a daughter it was good for us to learn and observe how to cook dishes.
This dish is simple and a delicious dish. it was always for special occasions and everyone loved it.
it was simply my favourite because everyone help out on making it and it always made it taste 100% more better.

The recipe is that you would need is

  1. penne pasta & spiral pasta.
  2. cream
  3. chunky none cut bacon.
  4. cheese of your choice.
now that you have gotten everything that you would need now it is time for you to get a big bot and fill it with water, after that turn your over to 180 degrees and put butter in the bot and leave it there to melt.

while that is combining cut up your bacon chunks into little bite sized pieces. when you have finished that you can fry them up in a pan until there are half cooked, during this you would want to tip out the juice in the process (this would be needed for the sauce) you will know they are half cooked if they are dark pink with a bit of golden skin to it, when its half cooked you take the pan off the heat and now put all the bacon in a big bowl and put it off to the side.

now its time for the sauce. in the same big saucepan with big sides you now pour in 2 or 1 small bottle of cream with the bacon sauce in the pan and mix it all together. after mixing it constantly add some cheese in to make it thicken so add a handful at a time until it has thickened. when that's done the pasta should be done and you rinse the pasta into a strainer but put a pot underneath the strainer and catch the buttery juice. when your done put all the pasta onto a tray, spread it own evenly. put the sauce on and mix it through now put the bacon bites onto it and mix it through. put cheese on top and bake it for 10 - 15 - 20 mins at 180 and bake.

That is the recipe for the Homemade Macaroni and Cheese

Wharepuni Vs Home - 2 Similarities and 2 Differences

What is a Wharepuni? - A Wharepuni is a house was used and made by the Maori people of Aotearoa back in the 1800's. everyone had a wharepuni until in the 1900's New Zealand governments were rebuilding wharepuni into big 2 storey houses. Now New Zealand is now known for it's amazing landscapes and on going buildings.

2 Similarities Between a Wharepuni and Home.

  1.  A Wharepuni and House are both two building that can keep you warm from the snow in winter and dry from stormy nights.
  2. They both have a front door and windows meaning that air can come in and out.
2 Differences Between Wharepuni and Home
  1. Wharepuni are short houses that many people will find cramped and uncomfortable to sleep in if you have a large rage of family.
  2. Nowadays houses are built differently like every other house but between Wharepuni and My home, My home has more windows and doors, Plus a bigger atmosphere to move and play in.
Thank you for reading, Have a good day!

Waka Ama Event - Why I Would love to be in a Waka Ama Race

I Would love to be in a Waka Ama race. Waka Ama racing would be a good experience to teach me about the safeties about the water and help cop me into rowing and stirring like a rafting boat.
Why I would love to be in a Waka Ama race is that it would be interesting and exciting to do something new and be in a team game with other amazing and passionate people to be aboard with.

I have been to a Waka Ama Event this year, it was good to cheer on my older sisters Waka Team From Tamaki College. They did amazingly well and it was all for there team work, high spirits, the positive attitude and humble attitude that it got them through there where they are now.
That is what inspired me to have interests in this water based event and hoping to go there next year when I start Tamaki College.

Thanks for reading and Have a Happy Hot Holiday Y'all :)

Setting Sail - My Message to you Jacob

[24/7/1783] - Day 24.
Dear Jacob,

I am nervous and feeling sea sick, it's been so long since i've seen land. I'm worried the waters of this mighty water will swallow me up in its big blue mouth.
It feels like forever since i've eaten fresh pig meat or cow meat. i'll make sure to always write letters to you.
It's been a long journey but I will make it out in the end, it will be worth the while of searching...

From Paris.

[3/8/1783] - Day 34
Dear Jacob

I'm terrified right now, its been 34 days since i left the village and it's getting harder to survive. we had to stop on a close island and camp there. were waiting for the big blue water to settle and wait until sunset.
its been amazing and breath taking, wish you were here. i've been fishing and it was fun. I really wanna show you how much I have improved throughout the journey, even show you my skills in fishing, I bet I can beat you no doubt. See you in the long run. From Paris

[1/8/1783] - Day 52
Dear Jacob.

We've finally made it!, I Can't believe it but we have. I'm scared about what we will find here but the view is amazing, we will be sending people back to get you all. in the mean while I will keep sending you letters about my journey. I will finally show you this amazing greenstone I found, the men on my boat made it into a necklace that is blessed by the gods above. I will present it to you when you come. I can't wait to see you, From Paris.

Arriving in New Zealand/Aotearoa - The First Settlers.

In the 1300's it was believed that Polynesian Men & Women were the first settlers in Aotearoa.
Throughout the years, those settlers were as Maori people, These people roamed throughout  Aotearoa, discovering new places and new animals/creatures.

As for some Maori people, Like me were told many stories about our ancestors for example, How the Treaty of waitangi came to be,Waitangi Day - The Seven Sisters  and many more.
But the most popular stories were legends and myths about the man named Maui and his older brothers.
there are several other books and stories to be told about him, but for today I'm going to tell you some interesting facts about Maui, Then tell you a little story of my own.

Here are 3 interesting facts about Maui

  1.  Maui is a trickster and would go long lengths for achieving his goals.
  2. Maui is known around aotearoa who fished up the north island that was said to look like a mighty sting ray.
  3. He possessed a Ancient jaw bone from Muri Ranga Whenua and used it to catch the might fish.

Here is a story I was told about - Here is a Little summary from a website I found it on

Maui was a demi-god, who lived in Hawaiiki. He possessed magic powers that not all of his family knew about.
One day when he was very young, he hid in the bottom of his brothers' boat in order to go out fishing with them. Once out at sea, Maui was discovered by his brothers, but they were not able to take him back to shore as Maui made use of his magic powers, making the shoreline seem much further away than it was in reality.
So the brothers continued rowing, and once they were far out into the ocean Maui dropped his magic fishhook over the side of the waka. After a while he felt a strong tug on the line. This seemed to be too strong a tug to be any ordinary fish, so Maui called to his brothers for assistance.
After much straining and pulling, up suddenly surfaced Te Ika a Maui (the fish of Maui), known today as the North Island of New Zealand. Maui told his brothers that the Gods might be angry about this, and he asked his brothers to wait while he went to make peace with the Gods.
However, once Maui had gone his brothers began to argue among themselves about the possession of this new land. They took out their weapons and started pounding away at the catch. The blows on the land created the many mountains and valleys of the North Island today.
The South Island is known as Te Waka a Maui (the waka of Maui). Stewart Island, which lies at the very bottom of New Zealand, is known as Te Punga a Maui (Maui's anchor), as it was the anchor holding Maui's waka as he pulled in the giant fish.

Wonder - The Amazing Book & Movie

Oh My God!!!! Today We Just Watched an amazing novel/movie called Wonder.

Lets start from the beginning,Back in term 2 we as Room 10 From TPS started reading wonder, an amazing and interesting book that tells a story about Auggie Pullman, Who has a Facial Deformity that is similar to Treacher Collins Syndrome. He is starting 5th grade at a new school called Beecher Prep.

He is different from all the other students and kids. But what makes him stand out is his amazing knowledge and his journey through his first time at school. He challenges through bullying and staring alot throughout the year. The Pullman Family go through a lot through the year but always stuck together as a family. It was an amazing movie and i recommend people to watch the movie and trailer

My Favourite Quote in that movie and book was If you had a choice between being right and being kind, choose kind.

My Favourite Actor/Person is Auggie, Because he is intelligent, even though he gets bullied he always have the will and motivation to get through them and always keep learning. Auggie pullman is an amazing person, even if he has a facial deformity, He still is an amazing, smart and independent student. He is as normal as anyone else.

The Book and Movie similarities are quite identical but also different. A lot of the scenes are different in the book.

For example,  in the book at the Nature reserve Jack,Auggie,Amos,Miles and Henry are in a little argument with 7th grades out in the woods  at night. In the movie they are out in the woods but in the evening where the sun is still out. It is incredible that things change from the book and movie.

This book is inspiring and heart warming to people that have a similar syndrome to auggie. it shows them that even if there different, everyone is different in an unique way, No one asked to get anything from the life cycle everyone goes through but receive it for a reason. Being different is unique and amazing. People just look at it different, But once they meet the person its more then it seems.

The Movie and book is inspiring and I love it.
Please watch the movie and book. It will really change your mindset.

Paris Tūrangawaewae - A Place To Stand - (Lesson 1)

Today I Learnt about TurangaWaewae. To be honest I feel like Whakatane is my Turangawaewae because of the original landscapes and its naturality. Its landscapes capture the point of how we were before and how we changed along the years of construction and designing. I'm grateful for being able to see how New Zealand still respects our landscapes because of how Maori's used to live and How we are able to keep out Turangawaewae apart of us.

Cure Kids Foundation - Red Nose Day!!!!

Today we did an amazing donation to Cure Kids Foundation, to support and help Cure Kids to be safe and healthy.

Kelly Sports planned out 3 games for us to do in 10 minutes it was awesome and amazing.
The three games were Capture the Flag,Ball Hockey & Tag.

It was amazing and a fantastic experience.
During those game it was so great to see a lot of people enjoying the games and being able to socialize and build really good friendships with one and another.

Cure Kids is an amazing and helpful foundation supporting people who are sick and trying to find cures for the unknown curable sicknesses.

Here is a Little Summary from there Website about What there Backstory is -
Since Cure Kids was established by Rotary in 1971 as the Child Health Research Foundation, we have helped save and improve the lives of thousands of kids both here in New Zealand and around the world.
We have invested almost $40 million in research which has helped shape and change the way children who live with serious diseases and health conditions are diagnosed and treated.
The breadth of the work we support is wide; just some of the projects we have funded,or are currently funding, include childhood cancers, inherited heart conditions, cystic fibrosis, sudden unexpected death in infants (SUDI), stillbirth, burns, and child and adolescent mental health, among many others.

Cure Kids are the largest funder of child health research outside the government, and we are supporting the best science possible to make a difference to the health and well-being of children in New Zealand.
To be honest I had an amazing, fantastic, awesome & really exhausting day today and I can’t wait till Monday for Run,Jump,Throw practice.

WAL: how Hobbies Can Become Careers - My Hobby Role Model/Hero

What Makes me "ME"?

What makes me  “ME”?

Learning Focus - I am learning to describe who I am

Success Criteria: I can...
  • identify and describe  my interests
  • identify and describe qualities needed for different jobs
  • Identify and recognise my qualities

Career idol

  • Choose two people you admire and think about what makes them special – perhaps someone in your family, someone you know or someone famous.
I Admire

My Dad
My Best Friend Huriata
Why would my idol be my dad? because my dad was super supportive as i was going up, he never disapproved on anything i choosed and he loves playing games like i do. My dad is like a role model to me since he was always their for me when i was down and he brightens a lot of my days and my siblings days with his funny jokes and his brilliant personality.
Huriata is my idol because she inspires me in so many ways with her knowledge and amazing thinking skills.  she motivates me to do what i love to do everyday and that’s the best thing i love about her. she encourages me and supports me through the toughests thing to the hardest things in life and i can count on her to always be there for me. even when i’m angry. she’s still there to push me to my limit and overcome my fears.

Poetry about Assembly Behaviour

My Own version of Assembly Behaviour

When you walk into the hall make sure you’re quiet. If you don't you will  get growed at so don't be cheeky about it.Sitting and waiting is boring i know, just wait until it starts and go with the flow. Happy smiles, happy feeling that's the school motto. Smile with pride and be a good fellow.  Don’t muck around or it will take forever, so quiet down because it’s now or never. Fold your arms fold your legs and wait patiently for it to start,  so be good not bad and it won’t restart.
don’t laugh, clap or talk very loudly.
you have to listen and focus on who’s talking very closely.
Sitting on the chairs is a privilege not a right. So don't disrespect it and sit down tight
Pay attention, sit down and enjoy this assembly, be good kids and find your seat sensibly.
Don’t talk to your friends during the assembly,if you don’t listen you will know what you're doing quickly. Bow your heads say the prayer and say it with pride. Don’t be ashamed and try to turn away and hide.teachers are waiting teachers are grumpy, dont seat down all slumpy. Put on ur smiles and be happy right now, you might find something surprising coming right now.
Sports award duffy awards given out to people. Clap with encouragement not being lethal.
When the Assembly ends, leave without pushing,
If you push and shove someone will end up falling. Walk out of the hall nice and sensibly,so that the seniors can put away the chairs responsibly.

The Loss of a Loved One.

Losing a Fight is worthless, losing a loved one is beyond priceless.

Matiu was only 12 and his mother  38 and father was 40.
He went to King’s School Prep (School for early students too year 8’s for boys). His headmaster Tony sissons always gave out a motto “Virtus Pollet (“Manliness Prevails”)
He used it to persuade them into doing hard work. His father approved of him being at that school, teaching him the ways of being a man and the expectations he needs to work hard. His dad was hardworking, handsome but also aggressive he pushes him too hard and makes him do things that are too difficult for him to do like run around the block 5 times then come home to do press ups, all that exercise stuff. One day him and his dad were playing hardcore basketball (Street Rules) Him and his dad were going at it for hours and hours until his dad heart raised so much his heart punched against his chest causing him to have a heart attack. Matiu called the ambulance and his mother telling her that him and his dad were heading to the hospital. 30 minutes later they were at the hospital surround by family members they haven’t seen in years.

Matiu’s dad was laying on his bed eyes wide open and his hands shaking.

In My Magic Box
By Me :D
Seeing as that i found a magic box, could be a tiny fox in the magic box.
It smells like the countryside with its perfume of nature in the air, seeing as the magic box is just a tiny box.
Hearing animals roaring and howling inside the tiny box. Wondering that a fox might be changed with a lock.
Tasting the box’s square tiles tasted like a chocolate cake with a special icing on top. But then a hint of jello jelly made my jaw drop.
The magic tiny box felt like a polar bear’s fur, warm and warm. Wondered where the skin of a polar bear’s skin was torn. But still it’s just a tiny box with an extra-ordinary secret that lays inside and out.
