TODAY: What’s inside the Earth?
Here are the learning outcomes for this part of the topic, you can tick them off as we go when you are sure about them:

  • Understand the structure of the Earth:

    • The names of layers (inner core, outer core, mantle,  continental crust, oceanic crust)
    • Their location within the Earth
    • State of matter of each layer (solid or liquid)
    • Temperature of each layer (inner core is between 5000-7000 degrees C)
    • Thickness of each layer, make a scale model

TASK ONE - the structure of the Earth - reading and writing stuff.

Use the following link to answer the questions below:

Watch the video here.  Video 2  Video 3

Earth's structure

1. How did scientists first find out about the structure of the Earth?

2. How many distinct layers can the Earth be divided into?

3. By clicking on the image in this interactive, give details about each of the following layers
of the Earth. Remember to use YOUR OWN WORDS:

  • crust

  • mantle

  • inner core

  • outer core

  • lithosphere

  • asthenosphere

Include an image of the structure of the Earth here:

TASK TWO - the structure of the Earth - doing stuff.

Try out the different activities on this page.

Remember to screenshot your answers and include them in this document as evidence of your work.

TASK THREE - the structure of the Earth - sharing stuff.

Using your internet search skills find at least three different things that could be used to help others learn about the structure of the Earth. For example, you could find:

  1. A website.
  2. A YouTube video.
  3. An online activity.

Insert the links here for each one that you find.

Explain in your own words why you think the things you have found might be helpful.

Task 1

These videos talk about plate tectonics  Video 2  Video 3  Video 4    6

Task 2:  What do the following terms mean?

a) tectonic plate - The 12 plates that connect to the 12 continent

b) convergent-  Made of 3 topics - Continent Continent-Collision,Continent-Oceanic crust Collision, Ocean-Ocean Collision

c) divergent -  At Divergent boundaries regies are formed

d)        Transform - Boundary - Plates slide past each other

d) subduction - the sideways and downward movement of the edge of a plate of the earth's crust into the mantle beneath another plate.

e.  Large pieces of the Earth’s crust are called tectonic plates. Name: Lithosphere & Asthenosphere

1) the two tectonic plates New Zealand sits across. Include an image here. Australian Plate and Pacific Plate.

2) two other major tectonic plates  Eurasian & North American plate

3) a plate that has no continents on it - i don’t know

Task 3: Tectonic plates can move apart, come together or slide past each other. Describe, using a named example and image, what happens when plates:

a) move apart  DivergentImage result for divergent tectonic plates

b) come together Convergent Image result for convergent tectonic plates

c) slide past each other Transform Image result for transform tectonic plates

Task 4:  Plate Tectonics Boundaries

This is a Format of the layers of the earth, it is a drawing of the labeled layers of the earth, Crust, Mantle, Outer Core & Innercore

It Shows the name of the layer and the purpose of the earth system.
